Hundreds Participate In Wings On Strings 2004

July 12, 2004 - Colorful kites of all shapes and sizes filled the breezy, blue skies above the grassy landing strip of EAA AirVenture Museum's Pioneer Airport on Saturday, July 10, for the third annual Wings on Strings. Nearly 500 kite enthusiasts, young and old, attended the all-day family event.

The Grand Launch at noon encouraged everyone off their blankets to either launch their own kite or hold the massive American Flag and sing the National Anthem. Around 1 p.m., about 75 children received a free kite to fly in the Kids Mad Dash. The young participants, with no help from their parents, raced along the field to fly their kite highest first to receive a $25 kite as first prize.

In addition to those activities, several professional kite fliers, including the Chicago Fire team, the St. Elmo's Fire team, Jim Wirt, Mike Delfar, and Josh and Zak Gordon, kept the audience mesmerized with their array of synchronized kite flying performances throughout the day. Kite-making demonstrations inside EAA's headquarters, impromptu kite flying tips for beginners outside on the field, and helicopter rides at Pioneer Airport made this free event, held in cooperation with the Gift of Wings and Kite Society of Wisconsin, a fun-filled day.
