EAA Skiplane Fly-in / EAA 50th Birthday Celebration

January 14, 2003: A festive gathering—snow or no snow—will be held this Saturday, January 18, at EAA’s Pioneer Airport for the annual EAA Skiplane Fly-In and Anniversary celebration marking 50 years since the founding of EAA on Jan. 26, 1953. If there is enough snow on the ground, skiplanes will be welcomed to Pioneer. If the ground remains bare but firm, wheeled airplanes may be allowed to land and take off at the facility. (Check with the main EAA website later this week for information regarding flight operations at Pioneer Airport.) Wheel pilots are also invited to fly into Wittman Regional Airport and use free shuttle service to Pioneer courtesy of Orion Flight Services FBO. Free Young Eagles flights for ages 8-17 will be available, while EAA’s vintage Bell 47 helicopter will offer rides ($25 for one passenger/$40 for two). All flight activities at Pioneer will take place weather permitting. Complimentary chili and birthday cake will be served at Pioneer Airport beginning at 10:30 a.m. Another tradition of the skiplane fly-in over the years is celebrating the birthday of EAA's matriarch Audrey Poberezny. Those driving in to the event can simply follow the signs to Pioneer Airport, and admission is free of charge. Pilots with questions should contact Sean Elliott at selliott@eaa.org.
