Interconnected dual controls are fitted to both cockpits. The front controls may be easily removed by pulling safety locking pins to facilitate solo flying, which must be carried out from the rear cockpit. The removed control column is carried in special fittings provided in the baggage compartment. The rudder pedals in both cockpits are adjustable for leg length. An integral control lock is located in the rear cockpit. Elevator and rudder trim is provided by tension springs adjustable from the cockpit. Automatic slots are fitted into the outboard leading edges of the top wings and are free to deploy when the operating lever, located below the instrument panel in the rear cockpit, is in the forward position.

Fuel system

The 19 imperial gallon airfoil shaped fuel tank is located between the center section struts above the front cockpit. Fuel flows by gravity through a fuel cock fitted to the lower left-hand side of the tank, which is operated manually by push-pull rods on the left side of each cockpit. A filter is located on the front bulkhead. A quick drain sump to drain contamination and water is located on the bottom of the fuel tank. A spring-loaded plunger is used to flood the carburetor to aid in starting and a float type gauge, visible from both cockpits, is located at the rear of the tank.

Electrical system

A 12-volt battery is located in the front cockpit in front of the control column on Tiger Moth aircraft that are equipped for night flying. Navigation light switches are located in the rear cockpit.

Landing Gear

The landing gear is of the fixed divided axle type with each leg containing steel springs in compression aided by a friction-damping device. Main wheel brakes and a steerable tailwheel complete the system.

Engine Controls

A throttle control lever is mounted on the left side of each cockpit while an adjustable mixture control is located in the rear cockpit only. Magneto switches are located outside of the fuselage on the right side between the cockpits. This location allows mechanics to easily start the engine to warm it up.


Limited instrument flying panels are fitted in both cockpits. Suction for the gyro instruments is supplied by two venturis, one each on the port and starboard sides.

Cockpit Equipment

The seats are not adjustable for height but are shaped to receive a seat type parachute. Sutton safety harnesses are fitted in each position. Communication is facilitated by way of speaking tubes between the cockpits. A luggage compartment is situated on the starboard side of the fuselage behind the rear cockpit. A leather compartment is attached to the rear of the front seat to hold navigation equipment, charts, etc. A blind flying hood can be fitted to the rear cockpit to facilitate instrument flying training.
