1957 Stits Skeeto SA-8 N6048C

Ray Stits’ Skeeto is a one-of-a-kind test bed aircraft built to explore the minimum power needed to sustain flight. Stits tested various commonly available small engines and configurations including lawnmower, chainsaw and outboard motors. Tests showed the reliability and construction problems homebuilder’s might encounter trying to adapt these powerplants for aircraft use. Ideal for their cheap price and wide availability, they would have made possible a $500 homebuilt aircraft. However, they were not feasible from a safety viewpoint at the time. Because of the nature of the Skeeto’s design, it was certified for flight, not to exceed 50 feet attitude! This aircraft is current registered with the FAA under registration number N45652.
