HAWKER HUNTER MK 51 – N611JR

The Hawker Hunter Mk 51 was manufactured based on the classic Hunter Mk 4. The first Hunters, the Mk 1, entered service in 1954 and were followed closely by Hunters Mk 2-12. The Hawker Hunters served for the Royal Danish Air Force in Great Britain and were exported on a scale unmatched by any other postwar British military aircraft.
The Hunter featured a windscreen formed of two layers of bulletproof glass and a canopy made of molded plastic. The cockpit also had Martin-Baker Type 2H ejection seats and a rear-view mirror mounted at the top of the windscreen frame. The Mk 51 was powered by a RR Avon 12201 engine.
EAA’s Hunter Mk 51 first flew on April 19, 1956. The Hunter was patterned after the prototype WB188 that set the world speed record of 727 mph in 1953. The Mk 51 was donated to the EAA AirVenture Museum as part of a collection of jets from the Combat Jets Flying Museum in 1992.
