DAVID BAKER WINS ‘BEST OF SHOW’ IN 30TH ANNUAL EAA ART CONTEST
May 25, 2005 - David Baker’s “Canopy” (Grey Study), a painting of an open T-6 cockpit, was awarded Best of Show in the 30th annual EAA Sport Aviation Art Contest. Baker, EAA 778913 and a member of EAA Chapter 35, hails from San Antonio, Texas. His subject was a Navy grey T-6 on static display at an air show held in Fredericksburg, Texas a couple years back. Baker, who works as a medical illustrator for The University of Texas Health Science Center, was awarded $1,000.
First place ($250) winners this year were:
- Sam Lyons, of Woodstock, Georgia, EAA 362685, Sport Aviation category, for “Yellow Lure,” a Piper Cub on floats at EAA AirVenture’s Seaplane Base.
- Jo-Ann Lizio, of Naples, Florida, Vintage category, for “WASP,” an abstract work featuring a trim tab to commemorate the great service provided by the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II.
- Bruce Thomas of North Saanich, BC, Canada, Warbird category, for “In the Sun,” a portrayal of a vulnerable young pilot in a Sopwith Camel as he scans a brilliant sky between the trenches during WWI.
- Barry Ross, of Fairfield, Iowa, EAA 243921, Open category, for “Lilienthal’s Glider,” a depiction of Otto Lilienthal soaring with one of his gliders, being inspired by the flight of an eagle.
EAA’s annual competition is the world’s longest-running aviation art contest. EAA received 114 entries for this year’s competition.

G. Frautschy, Executive Director & Editor, Vintage Airplane Association; Kristin Baeten, EAA Creative Services; and Alan Westby, Director, Collections & Interpretation, EAA AirVenture Museum.
